A marvel of 20th-century engineering? Or an oily horror lurking below the companionway steps? I spoke to two men with more than 120 years of experience between them to talk through the basic checks and diagnostics needed on a four-stroke marine diesel and the full article can be read here, at the Classic Boat website.

I would like to thank Michael Dennett and Steve Bil for a day of good knowledge and banter, while poking around the bilges of the Dunkirk little ships MB278 and Gay Venture. Michael has been a full-time boatbuilder for 66 years and counting and Steve has been a marine diesel engineer for 60 years. In their 12 decades of experience, they've seen it all, from melted exhaust baffles to sleeping bags wrapped around propellers!
